Description

Nos 31 and 33 (The Smithy Craft Studio), Waterside

An 18th-century brick house with a matching 18th-century smithy at the rear, located on Willow Walk. The building occupies an important position at the point where the narrow street of Waterside opens up to the south.

The main house is two storeys with attics. It has stopped gables at the north and south ends. A raised brick band runs between the storeys. The north and east elevations feature a five-window range, with one window blocked on the first storey and one blocked on the second storey. The south side has a single window. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, set in flush cased frames with segmental heads. The doorway is 20th-century work in simple 18th-century style. The roof is tiled in old Cambridgeshire tiles and has three hipped dormers.

The building was renovated and restored in the 20th century.

Nos 31 and 33, together with Nos 35 to 41 (consecutive), Nos 43 to 47 (odd), Nos 51 to 53 (consecutive), the Malthouse adjoining No 53, No 55 and the house adjoining No 55, and Quayside House, form a group with Nos 54 to 64 (even) on Quayside.
