Description
No. 48 High Street is a Grade II listed building that consists of two cottages, now combined into one, forming an L-shape. The front section dates back to the 16th century and originally featured an open hall; in the 17th century, a floor and hearth were added. Around 1840, the facade was covered in gault brick. The structure is timber framed and plaster rendered, topped with a plain tile roof and a tall red and gault brick chimney from the early 18th century located on the side of the ridge. The building has three bays and features a lobby-entry plan, three dormers, and three recessed hung sash windows with glazing bars. The doorcase, added around 1840, includes fluted pilasters, a plain entablature, and a dentil cornice. The rear section, originally a separate cottage, is from the 17th century and is also timber framed and plaster rendered, with a plain tile roof and a ridge stack. It has a three-bay plan. Inside, the front range has a ceiling inserted in the center bay and a small, off-center inglenook with a bread oven. The staircase, located beside the stack, is from the early 19th century. The rear range features abutting inglenook hearths, also with a bread oven.
