Description

This listing describes a pair of houses with an attached workshop range and front railings, built in the early 19th century, with mid-19th century workshops. The houses are constructed from gault brick and feature a slate roof, coped gables, and brick end stacks. The workshops are made of whitewashed gault brick with a weatherboarded first floor. The layout of the houses is distinctive, resembling a single villa with a central front door that leads to two inner doors.

The buildings are two storeys high and have cellars. They feature unhorned sash windows, with a three-window arrangement on the first floor consisting of a 3/6 sash on either side of a central double 1/2:1/2 sash. The ground floor has a 6/6 sash on either side of a panelled double door with an overlight, accessed by stone steps that include boot scrapers. At the rear, there are 3/6 and 6/6 sashes, along with a central paired 4/4:4/4 sash above a single-storey extension. The extension is located at the left end, while a two-storey lean-to is positioned at the right end behind the workshop range. This workshop range extends forward towards the street and features five small-paned windows on the first floor above a projecting lean-to. There are doors facing the street, including a taking-in door above.

The front of the property is defined by a low wall with railings and a gate. Inside the houses, the central front door opens into a lobby, from which the respective front doors lead to each house. Information specific to 18A indicates that it retains a stick baluster staircase with turned newels and a ramped handrail, along with original fireplaces in most rooms. Overall, this is an unusual pair of well-preserved houses from the period, complete with their workshop range and front railings.
