Description

Montagu House, Harrington House, Kent House, Sussex House, and Sidney House form a shopping arcade, offices, and college accommodation located on Sussex Street in Cambridge. The south side was built between 1928 and 1932, while the north side was constructed from 1938 to 1939, designed by E.R. Barrow. The buildings are made of red brick with pantiled roofs on the south side and plaintiled roofs on the north side.

The south side features three storeys and a dormer attic, with a ground floor that includes an open bowed arcade of 11 bays, supported by unfluted Roman Doric columns. This arcade houses a range of shops with late 20th-century plate-glass display windows. Access to the upper arcade is provided by balustraded stone staircases on both the east and west sides, leading to offices that occupy two storeys and a dormer attic. The lower floor has 12/12 horned sashes, while the upper floor features 8/8 horned sashes. The roofs are hipped with dormers, and the corners of the elevation are accentuated with rusticated quoins.

The north side consists of a 10-bay arcade of Roman Doric columns that support offices, which are lit by 12/12 horned sashes on the first floor and 8/8 horned sashes on the second floor. This side also has hipped roofs with two tiers of dormers. At the rear, college accommodation is accessible via a terrace and stair. Additional four-storey corner blocks with dormer attics are located at the east and west ends, and a linking bridge at the upper level on the east end was added in 1991 by Pleasance, Hookham, and Nix. The interiors have not been inspected.
