Description

The Church of St Mary is an early 12th-century building that has undergone alterations in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is constructed of flint rubble and ragstone, featuring Reigate dressings and plain tiled roofs. The nave, dating from the 12th century, includes two 19th-century windows in the north wall and a 12th-century doorway that has a 15th-century doorway within it. The original arch is round and decorated with diapered voussoirs and a tympanum. There are two blocked 12th-century windows with round heads. The south wall has two 19th-century windows, one of which incorporates a 14th-century rear arch. The 12th-century south doorway features a round arch enclosing a plastered tympanum, along with two blocked 12th-century windows. A 15th-century staircase leads to the roof loft, with upper and lower doorways that have three-centred heads.

The chancel, also from the 12th century, has a 19th-century east window that incorporates 14th-century jambs and a rear arch. The north wall contains one 19th-century window and one 14th-century window with a trefoiled light. The south wall features two 14th-century windows, each with two cinquefoiled lights. The west tower, built in the 15th century, consists of three stages and has an embattled parapet. The tower arch is formed of three chamfered arches, with moulded capitals. The west window of the tower has four centred lights set in a segmental head, and the west doorway has moulded jambs and a four-centred arch with a label. There are two single-light windows in the second stage and four two-light windows in the bell chamber. The chancel roof is supported by trussed rafters.
