Description

Orsett House is a large gentry house dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of red brick with a red plain tiled roof and features three storeys with a half basement, topped by coped parapets. The building has a double-range plan, with later wings added to the east and west. The main five-bay facade incorporates 19th-century double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, set beneath flat, gauged brick arches. A central pedimented doorcase in the Tuscan Doric style is accessed by a flight of stone steps. Other architectural details include a first-floor platband and a moulded parapeted cornice, alongside four side wall chimney stacks. A one-and-a-half-storey range with a gable was added around 1900 to the west, and a service wing with a flat-roofed garage block (dating to around 1975) is located to the east. The rear facade is similar to the front. The interior contains a panelled hall with pedimented doorcases, a dentilated cornice and a segmental arch opening onto the staircase. Original features include fireplaces, box shutters and other panelling, as well as original secondary stairs.
