Description

House. Built in 1934 by D. N. Martin Kaye (FRIBA) for N. T. Thurston, this building exemplifies the International Modern style. It is constructed of rendered brick with a flat felt roof and features steel windows and two low chimneys. The house is two storeys and designed with a square plan, including a recessed corner entrance.

The north elevation has a recessed section on the right side, with first-floor windows curving around both corners and a full-height central projecting triangular bay window to the stairwell. The ground floor features a corner window to the right, a central slit window, and a two-light window to the left. The west elevation has a recessed entrance with a flat concrete canopy, a slit window with decorative leaded light above, a central stack, a single-light window to the first floor on the right, and a two-light window below. The south elevation, on the first floor, has a four-light window, a pair of two-light windows, and a corner window to the right. The ground floor mirrors this arrangement, with two double French doors in the centre. The east elevation is characterised by a central stack, irregular window placement, and a glazed door on the right.

The interior remains unusually complete, showcasing a staircase with a solid dark plywood balustrade, original fireplaces, doors, and some light fittings. The bay window is a timber copy of the original.

The house, along with the adjoining tennis club, was envisioned as the centerpiece of a Modernist development planned by the Thurston family. Only one other International Modern house was built in Clatterfield Gardens, though it has undergone minor alterations. D. N. Martin Kaye, the architect, served as Head of Architecture at Southend School of Arts and Crafts from 1933 to 1943 and was the son of Alex Koch, founder-editor of Academy Architecture.
