Description
The Gate House and Stable Range, located to the north of Northborough Manor House, was built between 1330 and 1340 by the de-la-Mare family. It is the only remaining part of a significant manor house. A large 17th-century stable range extends to the west of the gatehouse. The structure is made of coursed and squared stone, topped with a steeply pitched Collyweston stone roof featuring coped gable ends. The gatehouse has a slightly lower roof line and includes a large moulded and chamfered archway. Inside, there is a narrow bay that was formerly rib vaulted, separated from a larger rib vaulted south bay by a cross wall, which contains an arched carriageway and a pedestrian way. The 17th-century stables are two storeys with an attic, featuring three widely spaced bays, three gabled semi-dormers, and three-light ovolo moulded mullion windows with cornices. The ground floor on the north side, facing the road, has a row of circular holes, while the south side, facing the house, has four-centred and round arched doorways.
