Description
Werrington War Memorial stands within the churchyard of St John the Baptist Church, accessible directly from the street via metal gates in the low stone wall. Constructed from Clipsham stone, the memorial takes the form of a foliated cross set upon a tall, slender octagonal column. The column rises from a square plinth, which appears to have two tiers, although the upper tier is created by stone tablets set around the base of the column. The plinth is further set on a two-stepped hexagonal base. The names of the 24 men of Werrington who died in the First World War are inscribed on three sides of the plinth, while the road-facing side is inscribed with the words: IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF WERRINGTON WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918. The names of the 11 men who died in the Second World War are inscribed on the stone tablets that surround the base of the column. A tablet above the First World War commemorative inscription bears the words: THESE TABLETS WERE ADDED IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO DIED IN THE WAR 1939-1945.
