Description
Longthorpe Tower House, originally known as Tower Farmhouse, dates back to around 1263 and features a north-south wing constructed from stone with a stone slate roof, built by William de Thorpe. The house includes a solar window on the north wall with two lights divided by a shaft and adorned with a quatrefoil in plate tracery. An east-west wing, which has 17th-century details and modern additions to the east, complements the structure. A tower was added to the northeast around 1300, featuring a square plan with turrets at each corner and walls that are 6 to 7 feet thick. The small windows have single lights with trefoiled heads set in shouldered lintels. There are some early 17th-century alterations, and the building has three storeys, with the lower two featuring quadripartite vaulting in the single room.
Notably, wall paintings in the Great Chamber on the first floor, discovered after the Second World War, are unique examples of secular decoration from the first half of the 14th century. The north wall depicts the Nativity and the Wheel of Life, with pairs of Apostles continuing around the room, and a dado of birds and scrolls. The south wall illustrates the morality of the Three Living and the Three Dead, while the west wall portrays the Labours of the Months. For further details, references include "Archaeologia" Vol. XCVI pp 1-57 and "Country Life" Vol CI p 601. Longthorpe Tower House, along with No. 329, forms a group, and it also groups with the outbuildings to the rear and the dovecote to the southwest.
