Description

The Church of St Stephen is a Grade I listed building, primarily dating from the 13th century. It is constructed from coursed stone and features lead and slate roofs. The nave includes late 14th century quatrefoil clerestory windows and a parapet. The north and south aisles have 13th century two-light windows with Y-tracery and foiled circles. There is a blocked north doorway with a trefoiled head, and the double-chamfered south doorway leads to a south porch with a round arch that has both chamfer and hollow chamfer details. The south windows of the chancel mirror the aisle windows, and there is a small ogee arched window in the south wall of the chancel. The east window consists of five stepped lancets, while the blind north wall of the chancel has a blocked arch that once led to a chapel.

The west tower is composed of three stages, featuring flat angle buttresses and a polygonal stair turret. It has lancet windows and round arched bell openings with pointed arch lights, separated by circular shafts, along with a frieze adorned with heads, stiff-leaf motifs, and figures. The stone broach spire is topped with two tiers of lucarnes.

Inside, the church has three bay arcades supported by circular piers with circular capitals and abaci, featuring pointed double-chamfered arches, with decorative elements on the south side. The chancel arch is double-hollow-chamfered, and the tower arch is also double-chamfered and pointed, with the original roofline visible above. There are piscinas in both the chancel and south aisle, as well as sedilia in the chancel. The font is a plain 14th century octagonal design with a 17th century cover, and the seating is from the mid-19th century.
