Description
The Duke of Bedford's Memorial is a commemorative structure located in Ampthill Park, commissioned by the 11th Duke of Bedford and designed by Cecil Greenwood Hare. It was erected after World War I to honor the establishment of the Ampthill Park training camp by the Duke in 1914 and to remember those who were trained there and later died in the Great War.
The memorial is made of stone and features metal plaques. It has an octagonal base with projections at each corner, a stepped octagonal plinth, and an octagonal column set on a chamfered pedestal topped with a cross. The capital of the column and the rounded ends of the arms of the cross are adorned with carved decorative details. On the south face of the pedestal, there is a coat of arms depicting three lions passant. Additionally, a metal sword is positioned at the center of the cross on the south side.
