Description
The Sandy War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made of Portland stone ashlar. It is located next to the Recreation Ground and takes the form of an octagonal cross with a moulded base, arms, and head that taper towards the top, where it is overlaid with a bronze sword. The cross is set on a triple-stepped, octagonal base, which in turn rests on an octagonal plinth. The plinth is inscribed with the words: ‘IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WARS 1914-1918 AND 1939-1945’, along with the names of the fallen.
Surrounding the memorial is a low wall made of squared, coursed rubble stone, arranged in an octagonal shape with one open side. This open side is flanked by octagonal piers that have bases and moulded ashlar caps.
