Description

Holwell Bury Farmhouse is a house dating from the 17th century or earlier. It is timber framed, with some exposed framing to the front elevation, and parts of the ground floor rebuilt in brick. The front is colourwashed with roughcast render, and the roof is covered with clay tiles. The house originally had a 3-room plan, and stands two storeys high with attics. The front (north) elevation has three 3-light casement windows to each of the ground and first floors. The ground floor has one leaded window on the right-hand side, while the others have glazing bars. A 20th-century gabled open porch shelters the front door, which is located between the two left-hand bays, with a plain door to the right-hand bay. A red brick integral stack is located at the left-hand gable end. A single-storeyed garage block is attached to the right-hand gable end. The rear elevation features a narrow, two-storey projecting gable and a single-storeyed lean-to addition on the right-hand side. There are two external chimney stacks, both partly rebuilt, the right-hand one being particularly substantial. A variety of casement windows are present. The house is situated within a moated site.
