Description
This is a row of six headstones located south of the church porch in St Mary's churchyard, likely reset from another location. The headstones date from the late 18th century or early 19th century and share a similar style, featuring segmental heads with stepped corners. They are made of limestone.
From north to south, the details of the headstones are as follows:
(i) John Stopp. The date is illegible. It features a winged putto, topped with swags and flanked by urns and drops.
(ii) William Stopp. The date is illegible. This stone also depicts a winged putto, with similar swags and flanking urns and drops.
(iii) William Stopp, who died in 1796. The central oval panel shows a mourning female standing beside a flaming urn, flanked by two oval medallions with profile busts, all surrounded by scrolled foliate decoration.
(iv) William Stopp, who died in 1811. This headstone displays a swagged urn above foliate scrollwork.
(v) Mary Edwin (?). The date is illegible. The central oval panel contains a lamb and flag, flanked by husk garlands and winged putti.
(vi) Elizabeth, wife of Jonas Welch, daughter of William and Mary Stopp, who died on October 21, 1831, aged 53. This stone shows a garlanded urn flanked by foliate scrollwork.
Further headstones continue the row southward, but these are from the later 19th century and are not of special interest.
