Description

No 3 is a small house dating from around the mid-17th century, which was remodeled in the 18th century and extended in the 19th century. The building features a timber frame that has largely been rebuilt in Flemish bond red brick, with a plain tile roof and gabled ends. There are brick external gable end stacks. The layout consists of a two-room plan, with a kitchen on the left and a parlour on the right, both heated by gable end stacks and accessed directly from the front of the kitchen. The walls were largely rebuilt in brick during the 18th century. In the 19th century, an outshut was added at the rear, and later in the century, a small unheated two-storey wing was constructed behind the left-hand room.

The exterior is two storeys high and features a slightly asymmetrical two-window south front. It has small 20th-century two-light casements, with cambered brick arches on the ground floor. The doorway is located to the left of centre and has a canopy supported by shaped brackets, along with a 19th-century panelled and glazed door. At the rear, the roof extends down as a catslide over the outshut on the left, while to the right is a narrow two-storey gable-ended wing, which has a 19th-century two-light casement on the first floor.

Inside, the left room contains a chamfered axial beam with notched stops and a large brick fireplace with a rough chamfered timber lintel. The right-hand room features a boxed-in axial beam and a 19th-century chimneypiece designed in the style of the 18th century. The joinery from the 18th and 19th centuries includes panelled and plank doors, some of which have wrought iron hinges. The chamber in the rear wing has a 19th-century cast-iron grate, while the chambers in the main range are ceiled, although the wall-plate, jowled wall-posts, and tie-beams remain exposed.
