Description
The Strict Baptist Chapel, built in 1849 on the site of an earlier building, is constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond with a gabled slate roof and a brick stack at the rear. This chapel is designed in a classical style, featuring a gabled three-bay front framed by clasped pilasters and a dentilled cornice. It has gauged red brick semi-circular arches over 30-pane sash windows, flanking a blind window set above a classical doorway adorned with pilasters and a cornice. The side walls also have three bays with similar sash windows to the front and flat brick arches over two-light casements with glazing bars at the rear, along with a door located at the rear left.
Inside, the chapel retains a complete set of furnishings, including carved bench ends on the pews and a gallery that wraps around three sides, featuring panelled balcony fronts and dados. Access to the gallery is provided by two straight-flight stairs with winders. Box pews flank the pulpit at the front, which is complemented by turned balusters and fret-cut brackets on the steps. Notable monuments within the chapel include wall tablets dedicated to Lawrence Chesher, the Minister who died in 1819, his wife Mary who died in 1817, and Mary Hudrial of Totternhoe who died in 1808. The history of the site is significant, as the first meeting-house in St Mary's Street was established in 1708.
