Description
Tofte Manor is a small 17th-century mansion that was extensively renovated and extended in 1902. The central gable on the south elevation features a datestone with the motto "Except the Lord build the house their neighbour is but lost that built it 1613." The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and has clay tile roofs. It stands two storeys high. The original house had a U-shaped plan with wings projecting to the north on either side of a slightly off-centre main entrance, which now has a large semi-circular headed door and a 3-light mullion and transom window above in a large gable. The south (garden) elevation has a similar entrance with a datestone over the upper window and a flat two-centred head to the door. There are three gabled dormers, with the western one above a 19th-century bay window. The building features tall ashlar stacks with pairs of long pots and corkscrew shafts. The 1902 extensions on the east side include a battlemented two-storey tower block with a square full-length bay on the south side, featuring 6-light mullion and transomed windows on each floor. A battlemented garden wall further east connects to a smaller tower, outbuildings, and stables. There is also a double pile two-storey extension on the north side, dated 1902.
Historically, part of the interior, specifically the Drawing Room, was decorated by James McNeill Whistler in 1880. This decoration included squares of Dutch metal interleaved with copper resinate, a technique similar to that used by Whistler in his famous work, the Peacock Room at 49, Princes Gate, London. A recent investigation in 1977 revealed that the ceiling decoration has survived.
