Description
The Suspension Bridge, located on The Embankment in Bedford, is a pedestrian bridge dated 1888 and designed by John Webster. It features a bow string lattice girder design with a span of 100 feet, constructed from iron. The ironwork was completed by E Page and Co of Bedford. The bridge deck is made of concrete, which is laid on corrugated iron plates by Westwood and Bailey. It has masonry abutments and two circular metal plates on the northern pillars. The eastern plate commemorates the opening by the Most Honourable the Marquess of Tavistock on 11th July 1888, with Joshua Hawkins Esq JP serving as mayor. The western plate notes that the engineer was John J Webster, a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and that the contractors were E Page & Co of Bedford, also from 1888.
