Description
Victoria Bridge is a railway bridge built between 1859 and 1862 by engineer John Fowler for the Severn Valley Railway Company. The structure features cast-iron and rusticated sandstone ashlar. Its main span consists of a segmental arch made up of four ribs, each formed from nine H-section cast-iron pieces that are bolted together. Above the arch, the track is supported by a network of iron struts. The rusticated ashlar abutments have plain parapets and are each pierced by a segmental arch made of blue brick, which includes a moulded string course at the springing level. On the west bank, there is a tow path situated between the abutment and the river, while on the east bank, the abutment wall extends down into the river. A painted inscription on the bridge reads: 'Victoria Bridge/1861/John Fowler, Engineer' in the center, with 'Messrs. Brassey & Co., Contractors.' to the left and 'Cast and erected by the Coalbrookdale Company' to the right.
