Description

The retaining wall with balustrading, archway, and gate piers is located about 15 yards south-west of Hadzor Hall and dates from around 1827. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a balustraded wall that is approximately 60 yards long, with a return at the north-west end. The balustrading is interrupted by square piers with moulded plinths and cappings at roughly two-yard intervals, each topped with gadrooned urns and smaller urns that have moulded lattice detailing.

The central section of the wall is set back, with steps on each side leading down to the garden. At the base of each flight of steps, there is a pair of ornate cast iron gates. The return of the wall ends with a semi-circular headed archway, which is flanked by square piers that have a moulded cornice and blocking course above. The arch features a prominent keyblock with a fleur-de-lys motif, and the imposts continue as a band to the flanking piers.

On the outer, north-west side of the arch, a wall about 8 feet high and 5 yards long is built at right angles to the arch, leading to a gateway that has large square gate piers with moulded bases and cappings, topped with large cast iron lampholders. The retaining wall, archway, and gate piers significantly enhance the design of the garden elevation of Hadzor Hall and are the main surviving structures of the complex 19th-century garden layout.
