Description

OVERBURY CP - SO 9437 - 9537 9/124 Bus shelter about 10 yards east of Overbury Post Office and Stores - II

Roadside fountain, now bus shelter. 1878-9 by Ernest Newton for Robert Martin. Limestone ashlar and timber-framed, half-hipped stone tiled roof laid in diminishing courses with overhanging eaves. Tall chamfered ashlar base, open to north front; west and east side elevations have stepped north returns about three feet long with moulded capping. Framed panels to sides and rear have closely-set diamond mullions. There is a chamfered arch-braced longitudinal main roof beam supporting eight collar trusses with two struts each. Within is a semi-circular stone projection (former trough?) at the centre of the rear wall which supports a timber seat; at the centre of the seat is a slightly tapered semi-cylindrical container (possibly concealing the former fountain head). There are timber benches attached to the side walls. The bus shelter is prominently situated on the main road through the village and is adjacent to the former Post Office and Stores (qv) and nos 45 and 47 (qv). (Saint, A: Richard Norman Shaw, London, 1976).
