Description

The bus shelter, located about 10 yards east of the Overbury Post Office and Stores, was built between 1878 and 1879 by Ernest Newton for Robert Martin. It originally served as a roadside fountain and is constructed from limestone ashlar with a timber frame. The roof is half-hipped and covered with stone tiles laid in diminishing courses, featuring overhanging eaves.

The shelter has a tall chamfered ashlar base that is open at the north front. The west and east side elevations have stepped north returns about three feet long, topped with moulded capping. The sides and rear are framed with panels that include closely-set diamond mullions. Inside, there is a chamfered arch-braced longitudinal main roof beam that supports eight collar trusses, each with two struts.

At the center of the rear wall, there is a semi-circular stone projection, which may have been a trough, that supports a timber seat. In the middle of the seat is a slightly tapered semi-cylindrical container, possibly hiding the former fountain head. Timber benches are attached to the side walls. The bus shelter is prominently positioned on the main road through the village, adjacent to the former Post Office and Stores and properties numbered 45 and 47.
