Description
Nos 48 and 49 are a pair of houses built in 1875, attributed to the architect Richard Norman Shaw for Robert Martin. They are constructed from coursed dressed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and feature a stone tiled roof laid in diminishing courses. The gable-end parapets have kneelers and gabled finials, and there is a central ashlar ridge stack with four shafts and moulded capping and base. The houses are single storey with an attic, featuring half-dormers and a chamfered plinth.
Each house has two bays, with windows that are chamfered mullioned types with casements, including a three-light window with hoodmoulds on the ground floors. The gabled half-dormers also have gabled finials, with a three-light and a two-light window featuring drip-moulds. The entrance to No 49 is on the left and has a doorway with a four-centred head and hoodmould. No 48 has a similar entrance at the right gable end, with a datestone above inscribed "RM/1875". There are attic lights in the gable ends and a loophole in the apex of both gables. This building shares a similar design, detail, and date with Nos 45 and 47 nearby.
