Description

Nos 43 and 44 is a farmhouse that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the early 19th century and underwent alterations around 1880 and 1905, likely by Ernest Newton for Richard Biddulph Martin. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, partly faced with ashlar and features ashlar dressings. It has a plain tiled roof with gable-end parapets, an ashlar ridge stack at the north end, and another ashlar stack to the southeast of the main roof, both with two square shafts, a frieze, and moulded capping.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic and has a chamfered plinth. It consists of three bays; all windows are 16-pane sashes, except for the windows on both floors of bay 1 and the ground floor window in bay 2, which are blind. The main entrance to No 44 is located between bays 2 and 3 and features a 6-panelled door, with two panels raised and fielded and two panels glazed.

The north gable end, which faces the main road, has a rectangular first-floor light with a moulded architrave and a similar attic light. There is a substantial rear right wing that includes a ground floor 4-light and a first floor 3-light chamfered mullioned window with hoodmoulds facing the main road. The south gable end of the main range features a 4-light ground floor and a 3-light first floor ovolo mullioned window with hoodmoulds, as well as a 2-light attic window with a chamfered mullion. Additionally, there is a late 19th-century ashlar-faced brick rear left wing and a rubble rear central wing, both of which are single storey with an attic. The current main entrance to No 43 is located in the rear central wing.
