Description

The Old House is an early 17th century building located on Main Street in Cropthorne. It has a timber frame with plaster and painted brick, and has been restored. The house is single storey with attics and features modern or restored moulded wood mullioned and transomed six-light windows. A projecting gabled bay is present on the south side. At the northern end, a large modern block in a traditional style has been added, which projects to the rear, blending sympathetically and attractively with the original structure. The roof is thatched. The garden, designed between 1900 and 1902 by Sir Edwin Lutyens, includes a sunken area with stone walls and ball finials, as well as a stone sundial. The Old House, along with Perseus & Phoenix and The Pound, forms a group of buildings.
