Description

Broad Marston Manor is a manor house dating back to the 16th century, largely rebuilt in the 17th century. It is constructed of Cotswold stone with some blue lias, and has an imitation stone tile roof with coped gables. The front of the house is three storeys high, while the rear is two storeys high with an attic. Evidence of refronting and heightening is visible in the internal timbers.

The front range has four windows, featuring stone mullions with hoodmolds. A string course runs above the first floor. The windows on the second floor have a 3:3:4:3 light arrangement, while those on the first floor have a 3:3:4:4 arrangement. The ground floor incorporates some blue lias stone at the left end, with a two-light window, a modern porch, a three-light window, a Tudor arched central doorway, and two large modern three-light windows set beneath original hoodmolds.

The rear of the house has mullioned windows with hoodmolds on two floors, with three three-light windows to the first floor and one to the ground floor. There are two large rear wall stacks; the one on the left is an outside stack with a blue lias stone base. The south gable end has a stone mullioned two-light window on the first floor, a single attic window, and a ground floor window with two small cusped pointed lights. The north gable end has been rebuilt in brick.

Inside, the house features a timber-framed cross passage and a 17th-century staircase which retains its original rail on the second floor only. The manor house was the property of the Bushell family from 1245 to 1622, at which point it was sold to Sir Thomas Bennett, who likely rebuilt the house.
