Description
Merchants House is an early 18th-century house, later converted into flats around the 1980s. It is located on Quay Street in Worcester. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with flat arches of red gauged brick, stone sills, and keystones. The roof is slate and hipped. The house is in an L-shape.
The exterior has three storeys and three windows on the first floor. The windows are 6/6 sash windows set in near-flush frames, each with a flat arch and fluted keystone. A low parapet tops the building. The main entrance on the right has a renewed six-panel door within a timber surround, beneath a cambered arch.
The right return has two storeys with attics and three first-floor windows, also with 6/6 sash windows in near-flush frames, sills, and cambered arches. A left-hand entrance features renewed double six-raised-and-fielded-panel doors with an original fanlight incorporating radial glazing bars and an arch of red gauged brick on imposts and a keystone.
The interior remains uninspected.
Merchants House forms a group of buildings with Gascoyne House, Bond House, and Brown's Restaurant on South Quay, as well as with St Andrew's Church Tower on Deansway.
