Description

34 and 34A Foregate Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat. It dates from the late 18th century and has seen later additions and alterations, particularly to the ground floor in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond, which has been whitewashed on the front facade. It features stone quoins and brick stacks with oversailing courses and pots at both ends. The structure is three storeys tall and has four first-floor windows. The raised quoins extend from the first floor through to the second floor. At the top, there is a shaped cornice and a coped parapet.

The first floor is fitted with 6/6 sash windows, while the second floor has 3/3 sash windows, all of which have flat arches made of gauged brick and keystones. The ground floor includes a glazed shop front with off-centre, glazed double doors. To the right, there is a 6-panel door with an overlight, set in a beaded surround, and a continuous cornice runs above the ground floor.

Inside, the ground floor has been gutted, and the rest of the interior was not inspected. Historically, during the 18th century, Foregate Street was referred to as 'the mall,' and an 1802 guide noted that it was well-paved and broad enough to allow for a pleasant circulation of air, making it a popular promenade. This building is part of a significant group that includes the Shire Hall, the Statue of Queen Victoria, the City Museum and Library, and several other notable buildings on Foregate Street.
