Description
Double Gate Farmhouse is a 17th-century house that was altered in the 19th century. It features a combination of timber-framing and red brick, topped with plain tile roofs. The building is two storeys high with an attic and was originally likely in an L shape, gabled to the north and east. The north wing has a ridge stack with four clustered shafts added in the 19th century. The timber-framing is exposed on the north front, and the main gable shows signs of having been heightened.
On the ground floor, there is a four-light cross mullioned window, while the first floor has a three-light casement window and a pair of attic casements. To the east, there is an adjoining range that includes a gabled 19th-century timber-framed stair turret and a timber open lean-to passage. The first floor of this range has a three-light window.
The west side of the north wing features a 19th-century canted bay with a tiled roof. The west gable is made of brick and has cambered head windows, with some old bricks and some from the 19th century. The south side has a large 19th-century gable with cambered head windows and a brick-faced wing to the east that includes a dormer, two two-light first-floor windows, a four-light cambered head ground floor window, and a door within a 19th-century timber porch. In the 19th century, this farmhouse served as the residence of the farm bailiff for the Pull Court estate.
