Description
The bandstand in Priory Park, Great Malvern, is an early 20th-century structure made of cast iron and timber, featuring a lead-covered roof and standing on a brick base. It has an octagonal shape.
The bandstand is supported by a blue brick plinth, constructed around 1983, with stone coping that may be original. Above the plinth, there are eight cast-iron columns topped with foliate capitals. The spandrels and cornice are decorated with filigree ironwork. A cast-iron balustrade surrounds the bandstand, with gates on the west side leading to a staircase. The roof has a ridged design at the corners and an ogee shape, topped with metal grilles, cresting, and a spike and ball finial. Inside, the wooden ceiling features moulded ribs and a central boss with a gilded star. Many of the blue bricks in the plinth have incised initials and names of donors who contributed to the bandstand's restoration, with a brick dated 1983 set into the staircase tread.
Originally located in Priory Park, the bandstand was listed in 1979 while situated in Victoria Park, Malvern Link, but was returned to its original location around 1983. The bandstand is recognized for its decorative cast iron design and the commemorative nature of its current plinth.
