Description

The Church of St Wulstan is a Roman Catholic church built in 1862 by B Bucknall. It features rubble construction with limestone dressings and a slate roof. The church includes a nave, a south transept, and a south baptistry. The windows showcase Geometrical tracery, and there is a prominent rose window at the west end. The west doorway is pointed and moulded in three orders, complete with angle shafts, and is topped by a gabled band. Some of the carving is unfinished, with rough stone blocks set aside for head stops, crockets, and gargoyles.

The north wall of the nave consists of five bays separated by buttresses, each bay containing windows with two pointed lights and quatrefoils. The north wall of the transept has three gabled bays, featuring windows with three trefoiled lights and tracery. The south wall of the nave has one bay to the west of the hexagonal baptistry and five to the east, with the baptistry itself having chamfered pointed windows. A turret is located at the south end of the south transept, which has a gable facing east with two upper-level windows, each containing two traceried lights. The east wall of the nave is made of brick and includes a blocked chancel arch and a blocked arch leading to a crypt, while the chancel remains unbuilt.

Inside, the windows have inner stone arches separated by slim shafts that support the roof trusses, which are adorned with carved braces leading to high collars. At the west end, there is a pitch pine gallery that houses an organ. A three-bay arcade of pointed arches opens into the vaulted north transept, and the blocked chancel arch is moulded and pointed.
