Description

This barn, stable, and granary dates from the mid-17th century, with significant remodelling around 1712 and later alterations in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. Constructed of brick, with some timber-framing having rendered and brick infill, and partially refaced, it has plain and machine-tiled roofs. The building is laid out in an L-shape.

The barn section, aligned north/south, has four bays. A wagon bay is situated in the second bay from the south end, featuring opposed archways. The west elevation features a row of rendered panels below eaves level, with short upper corner braces. The main east elevation has a two-level left bay, marked by a two-course band at the upper floor level. Below this band is a blind window with a gauged flat head and a stone keyblock inscribed “W I P / 1712”. To the right of the wagon bay are two multi-paned windows. The right-hand end of the barn has a five-bay west return with a multi-paned window facing east. Inside the barn, the collar and tie-beam truss in the north side of the wagon bay has two collars and struts. Otherwise, tie-beam trusses with raking struts are present.

The south gable end incorporates a stable and granary, two levels high, with a cogged eaves cornice and header ventilation courses. The east elevation shows a 20th-century window inserted into an original opening with a cambered head. External brick steps lead to a loft door in the west elevation.

The barn, stables and granary enclose the former farmyard to the north and east of Fairfield House and face its original 17th-century front elevation. The buildings are included for group value.
