Description

Old Station Bungalow is a railway station house built in 1839 for the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway. It is constructed of red brick and features a graduated slate roof. The building is single-storey with three bays, including a small vestibule on the left and a later wing on the front right.

On the platform side, which is at the rear, there is a plinth and gauged brickwork. The central canted projection has ashlar quoin-strips and three tall 12-pane sash windows with projecting sills and rubbed-brick flat arches. The former doorway in bay one has been replaced with a casement window, while bay three is covered by a 20th-century addition. The hipped roof has a boxed eaves overhang, with end stacks and an additional stack to the right of the canted projection.

The entrance front features a central door beneath a shingled canopy, with a blocked overlight above. Large 12-pane sash windows are located beneath segmental brick arches. The later wing has a shouldered external end stack and a 12-pane sash window on the left return, also with a hipped roof.

This station was built at the intersection with the London and Birmingham Railway main line and served as a principal junction between the railway systems of the north and south from 1839 to 1842. It predates the link provided by the Midland Counties Railway Derby-Rugby line, which was completed in July 1840. The first station clerk was James Allport, who later became General Manager of the Midland Railway from 1853 to 1880 and was knighted in 1884.
