Description
The middle lock of three at Smethwick Locks, located approximately 140 meters west of Bridge Street on the Birmingham Canal, dates from around 1790. This lock was constructed when the original Smethwick summit level, established in 1769, was lowered to match the Wolverhampton pound. It is built of brick with sandstone kerbstones, some of which have been replaced by concrete. At the upper end, there is cast-iron sluice gear, and the lock features single gates. The locks were bypassed following the completion of the Smethwick cutting on the Birmingham level in 1829.
