Description
The bottom lock of three Smethwick Locks, located immediately west of Bridge Street on the Birmingham Canal at Wolverhampton Level, is a canal lock likely built around 1790. This construction coincided with the lowering of the original Smethwick summit level from 1769 to match the Wolverhampton pound. The lock is made of brick and features sandstone kerbstones, some of which have been replaced with concrete. It is equipped with cast-iron sluice gear at both the upper and lower ends and has single gates. The locks became obsolete after the completion of the Smethwick cutting on the Birmingham Level in 1829.
