Description
The Council House, built between 1905 and 1907 by Fred J Gill, is a Town Hall located in Smethwick. It features a combination of yellow terra cotta and red brick with a slate roof. The building is designed in a symmetrical Baroque style, consisting of two storeys and 15 bays. Notable architectural elements include a cornice, balustrade, and chamfered quoins. The three central bays, along with the second and the 14th bays, project outward. The outer projections have windows that are flanked by Ionic pilasters and topped with open segmental pediments. The ground floor windows in these bays have round heads, while the upper windows feature open pediments. The remaining bays have windows with architraves that include cornices and keystones, with the upper windows having segmental heads. The central bays are accentuated by engaged Ionic columns and a pediment, with round-headed windows on the ground floor. Above the structure is a cupola with a clock, and the main doorway also has a round head. Inside, there is a domed stair hall that features an Imperial stair with iron balusters.
