Description
This canal footbridge, located at the junction with the Birmingham Canal in Smethwick, was built in 1828. It is made of cast iron and features brick abutments with sandstone dressings. The bridge has a single elliptical arch, with each side constructed from two castings that are bolted to a central "keystone." The sides are decorated with pierced saltire crosses and a band of quatrefoils below the handrail. The spandrel is inscribed with "HORSELEY IRON WORKS STAFFORDSHIRE 1828."
