Description

Cape House is a dispensary built in 1907, constructed from red brick with terracotta dressings and topped with a slate roof. The building features a central entrance beneath a clock tower, with a hall to the left (west) and a single-storey range to the right (east), along with a two-storey block at the back facing west. It is designed in the Wrenaissance style.

The exterior is asymmetrical, with one and two storeys. The south front includes a central tower with rusticated quoins, a modillion cornice, and a clock stage topped with a cupola. At the base of the tower is a round arch doorway with panelled double doors, a putti figure in the keystone, and swags in the spandrels. Above the doorway is a plaque inscribed "Birmingham General Dispensary," with a scrolled and festooned cornice above it. The hall on the left features a large Venetian window with a festooned dated cartouche in a broken pediment above. To the right of the tower, there are one and two bays, with the right-hand bay set back. The windows are framed in moulded architraves with festooned scrolls at the heads, a pulvinated frieze, a modillion cornice, and a blocking course.

The right-hand return on the east side is two storeys high, with a projecting range of two: one: two bays, featuring rusticated quoins. The central bay has a small segmental pediment containing a cartouche and a blocked doorway, flanked by canted bay windows, with a small porch in the left angle. The west side has a Venetian window in a pedimental gable, with a 20th-century single-storey extension below. The windows throughout the building have leaded panes, some of which include stained glass, while the east side features sash windows with glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected.
