Description
The Chief Post Office, located at 200A Wolverhampton Street, was built in 1909. This building is constructed from ashlar and features three storeys plus a basement, with the ground storey having a rusticated appearance. It has five sash windows set within moulded architraves, each adorned with triple keyblocks. The central window is highlighted by an iron balcony and flanked by three-quarter round Ionic pilasters, topped with a curvilinear pediment that displays a finely carved panel of the Royal Arms. The three central bays are defined by additional three-quarter round Ionic pilasters and are surmounted by a pediment. The building has quoins at the corners, a band at the first floor, and two doorways featuring cornices on consoles, rectangular fanlights with iron grilles, and six-panelled divided doors with steps leading up. To the right, there is a plain two-window wing that continues the overall character of the building. The roofline is finished with a modillion eaves cornice and a balustrade. The Chief Post Office is part of a group that includes Nos 193 to 200 and No 200A, along with Nos 1 and 2 County Court, No 3A, and Nos 4 to 7 Priory Street.
