Description

Rose Cottage is an 18th-century house, possibly with earlier origins, that was extended later in the 18th century or in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered brick, with a painted brick rear wing, and features a clay plain tile roof with gabled ends. It has brick axial and gable-end stacks.

The house has a two-room plan with a central axial stack, and the left room includes a gable-end stack. Originally, there was likely a lobby entrance in front of the axial stack, but the doorway was moved to the right when a stair turret was added to the front, blocking the original entrance. A wing was added to the rear of the right-hand end later in the 18th century or early in the 19th century, as indicated by the L-shaped plan shown on the William Fowler map of 1824.

The exterior is one storey with an attic and features an asymmetrical three-window west front. It has three-light 19th-century casements on the ground floor with glazing bars and cambered arches, and two-light attic casements that break the eaves in raking half-dormers. There is a gabled projection, likely the stair turret, at the center with a 20th-century window, and a porch to the right with a tiled roof on a rendered pier and a plank door. The rear, or east side, includes a gable-ended wing to the left with a later outshut at the end, a timber shed in the angle on the right, and a 20th-century conservatory on the left. The interior has not been inspected.
