Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church that was entirely rebuilt in the 1830s and 1840s, with the exception of the Decorated tower, which was restored. It is constructed from rubble stone brought to course and features ashlar detailing. The western tower includes two-light belfry openings with trefoil heads and a quatrefoil at the apex. The ashlar setback buttresses, battlemented parapet, and south-facing porch are likely 19th-century additions. The body of the church was rebuilt during this period due to subsidence caused by mining and was reopened in 1846. This new structure is made of coursed rubble and has round-headed and pointed arches for the windows. A reset Norman tympanum displays a winged St. George stabbing an intricately coiled dragon.
The Church of St Mary is part of a group that includes the churchyard cross and numbers 8 to 11 in the village.
