Description
The Charterhouse is a Grade I listed building that incorporates significant remains of the Charterhouse of St Anne, which was founded in 1381, with the foundation stone of the church laid by Richard II in 1385. The building features an early 15th century sandstone range and the Prior's Lodging, which has been altered by a 16th century timber-framed first floor on the north side. Notable architectural elements include tall chimney shafts, an original moulded stone fireplace, and some original window tracery. The interior contains 15th and 16th century wall paintings, showcasing important early Renaissance motifs. Additionally, there are 18th century doorways and sash windows with glazing bars. The Charterhouse, along with the Coach House and the Medieval Precinct Wall, forms a cohesive group of historical structures.
