Description
The Ashley and Strathcona Buildings at Birmingham University are linked faculty buildings constructed between 1961 and 1964 by the architects Howell, Killick, Partridge and Amis. The taller block features a reinforced concrete frame, with pre-cast concrete and concrete blocks, topped with a flat roof. This tower block is made of concrete blocks and has a low-pitched lead-covered roof.
Adjacent to this is a low, slightly curved two-storey lecture room block, which connects to a five-storey spiral block that houses tutors' offices. This spiral block encloses a central covered atrium that is illuminated from above, with a staircase winding around its outer edge. The low block has vertical strip windows and wall panels that rise to create a broken parapet. The taller block features individual 2-light windows in each room, each with canted sides that form an oriel, and the beam-ends are expressed at ceiling level between the rooms.
