Description

Nos. 33 to 36 Albion Street, built around 1830, originally formed a symmetrical group of four houses, with No. 36 and No. 37 projecting as wings. However, No. 37 has been significantly altered and is no longer listed. The buildings are three storeys high and are faced with stucco. No. 33 has two bays, while Nos. 34 and 36 each have two bays, along with a lower two-storey extension that was likely used as gig houses and has since been modified. The ground floors are consistently channelled up to the first-floor sill band. The upper floors of No. 33, which is the wing, feature two bays articulated by Soanian incised panel pilaster strips and a plain parapet with coping. The main block of Nos. 34 to 36 has a low hipped slate roof with moulded bedding at the flat eaves. The windows are revealed glazing bar sash windows. No. 34 includes a round-headed doorway with a four-panel door and fanlight, along with pilaster strips and consoles supporting a projecting cornice. No. 36 boasts a notable doorway with a panelled door and a radial glazed fanlight, flanked by engaged slender columns and an oval panelled section of entablature topped with an open pediment. This building is an early example of domestic architecture in the jewelling quarter, which has since been adapted for workshop use.
