Description
The Parish Church of St Giles is a Grade II* listed building located on Church Road in Sheldon. It dates back to the early 14th century and features a nave with a contemporary timber roof supported by four trusses, which have curved braces attached to the tie-beams. The north aisle was added in 1867 during restoration work by Slater and Carpenter, but it retains a mid-14th century arcade that lacks capitals on the piers. The west tower and an extension of the nave by one bay were completed in 1461. An early 16th century timber-framed south porch is notable for its principal rafters, which are decorated with quatrefoils. The chancel was also constructed in 1867. Inside the church, a 15th century reredos has been reset in the north wall of the aisle. This reredos features niches with crocketted gables flanked by tall pinnacles. Originally depicting the Annunciation, the figures of the Angel and the Virgin, along with the vase of lilies between them, have been cut away.
