Description
The Parish Church of St Margaret, located on St Margaret's Road in Ward End, is of medieval origin. It was reported to be in ruins in the early 18th century, but the west tower, which is rendered, appears to date from that period. The church fell into a state of disrepair again in the early 19th century, and the present structure was dedicated in 1834. It is possibly designed by J Frith and features a Commissioners' Gothic style with lancet windows. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings that are rendered. Inside, there is a Gothic monument dedicated to William Hutton (1723-1815), the author of "History of Birmingham," which includes a bust created in 1848 by Peter Rollins of Birmingham, as well as a notable Royal Arms on the north wall.
