Description
St John's House is a mid-18th century building located on Alum Rock Road in Saltley. It is constructed of red brick and has an L-shaped plan, featuring two storeys and a three-bay front facing the road. The house has a plain band and toothed brick eaves at the gable end, topped with an old tiled roof. The broad windows are adorned with segmental gauged brick arches, most of which have late 19th-century tripartite casements. The right-hand window on the first floor was lengthened in the early 19th century and has a marginal glazed casement. A similar window can be found in the east gable end. The wing on this side contains two windows and a gabled dormer. The entrance is also located on this side, featuring a doorway with engaged Tuscan columns and sections of entablature that support a pediment above a semi-circular fanlight. On the west gable end of the main block, there is a two-storey brick bow with an ogee arched gothic glazed window on the first floor and a revealed glazing bar sash window on the ground floor. Large 20th-century neo-Georgian additions and a chapel are not included in the listing.
