Description

The Baptist Church Hall, constructed in 1903, is a building used as a Sunday school located on Alexander Road in Acocks Green, Birmingham. It features English bond red brick and terracotta, topped with a plain tile roof that has terracotta coped gable ends and wavy ridge tiles. The building has brick gable-end stacks and is designed in a Free Flemish Gothic style.

The exterior consists of a two-storey south front with three bays. The central bay projects forward and is gabled, topped with a small wavy pediment at the apex, and displays the name of the hall on terracotta scrolls held by angels. The central doorway features panelled double doors and a segmentally curved canopy with a cornice supported by consoles, adorned with putti below. Above the door is a deeply recessed overlight flanked by side-lights that have terracotta tracery. A panelled entablature sits above, and a large eight-light terracotta traceried Perpendicular window is positioned above the doorway, featuring a moulded segmental arch. The left and right bays contain three-light traceried terracotta windows with cusped heads; the ground floor windows have transoms, while the first-floor windows feature panelled aprons and a central panel with a shield. The building has a modillion eaves cornice and splayed corners that rise to squat polygonal turrets with panelled sides, fleurons at the corners, and a heavy moulded cornice. A copper-clad ogee cupola with a tall finial crowns the structure.

Inside, the hall boasts an arch-braced roof supported on corbels. The front of the building is noted for its impressive use of Flemish Gothic style, enhanced by fine terracotta dressings.
