Description

The Second Church of Christ Scientist, located at 55 Broad Street, was built between 1848 and 1849 by J.R. Botham of Birmingham. Originally serving as a Presbyterian church, it is constructed of blue brick with stone dressings. The building features a two-storey box layout with three bays across and nine bays deep, topped by a tower that consists of three stages. The first stage is square with banded rustication, the second stage is also square and includes bell-openings facing the main directions, with Tuscan columns at the corners. The third stage is octagonal, featuring a bold bracketed cornice and a small domed cap.

The west front has an advanced central bay that contains a door adorned with bold volutes, a cornice, and a lunette. Each of the outer bays has a subsidiary entrance and an arched window. On the sides of the building, there are blank windows at ground floor level and arched windows at first floor level. All first floor windows are designed with panels below, creating a broad band effect. The interior of the church has been completely altered.
