Description
The Parish Church of the Ascension, dated 1704 and possibly designed by Sir William Wilson, is a Grade II* listed building that has undergone alterations. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. The lower part of the projecting west tower and the nave, which is three bays long, feature giant Roman Doric pilasters that support an entablature and balustrade. The church has arched windows with moulded stone surrounds, complete with impost blocks and keystones, and quoins at the corners. In 1860, a chancel and transepts were added in the same style as the 18th-century work. The upper part of the tower, also likely from 1860, includes an octagonal brick turret topped with a copper cupola. Inside, the church has a coved ceiling, a simple 18th-century pulpit, and painted early 19th-century Royal Arms.
